By experiencing this failure first hand, we know the consequences and let downs, of not seeing directly. Walker Percy uses the terms ââ¬Å"dialectical movementâ⬠, ââ¬Å"symbolic complexâ⬠, and the ââ¬Å"itâ⬠to support his idea of language. Percys interest in language recognizes the use of symbolic language to which plays a larger role in our consciousness (Percy 566). Throughout this paper Iââ¬â¢m going to explain; give examples and ideas that support Percyââ¬â¢s idea. To start out with, Percy uses the term dialectical movement. Almost every teenage girl can relate to this, whether itââ¬â¢s from personal experience or from watching a film. When a girl looks at a prom dress for the first time, she instantly thinks of the fairy tale endings in movies. Something similar to dialectical movement, to which Percy also describes, is symbolic complex. Percy describes symbolic complex, ââ¬Å"the thing is no longer the thing as it confronted by the Spaniard; it is rather that which has already been formulated- by picture postcard, geography textbook, tourist folders, and the words Grand Canyon. If it does not conform to what was seen on the postcard, then we are not able to see it directly and are only conscious of the disparity between what is and what is supposed to beâ⬠(Percy 566). For example, parents might believe colleges are full of students throwing wild parties and getting drunk every night. To which might be true but when parents and their child visit a college, they do not experience the wild parties. Therefore, they are not able to see what the college is like directly. These people get the sugarcoated version of the college and what is was supposed to be. Another example of symbolic complex from the passage is, ââ¬Å"A student who has the desire to get at a dogfish or a Shakespeare sonnet may have the greatest difficulty in salvaging the creature itself from the educational package in which it is presented. The great difficulty is that he is not aware that there is a difficulty; surely, he thinks, in such a fine classroom with such a fine textbook, the sonnet must come acrossâ⬠(Percy 573). The package is what is described as symbolic complex. The package is what people see as a whole, they do not break it down for what it really is. This also happens when people are trying to manage their time. It is not uncommon for the everyday college student to be overwhelmed about the three finals they have to study for and five papers they have to write due in a week. They immediately freak out and stress out. This is an example of symbolic complex. This student only sees the finals and paper as a whole instead of breaking everything down step by step. Symbolic complex is seeing something as a whole and not experiencing it. Symbolic complex is seeing and believing something to be great and beautiful, but in all reality itââ¬â¢s not what itââ¬â¢s cracked up to be. A personââ¬â¢s perception on a specific event is very much associated with dialectical movement. Anything will have influence on their perception too. For example, watching movies or even observing everyday situations in public. The way people perceive things will later affect their reaction subconsciously. Symbolic complex is often described with this example, receiving a postcard from a tropical dream vacation spot. The water in the picture is as blue as the sky and the sand is as while as snow. This paradise is something anyone has only dreamed of visiting. For some reason you decide to take a vacation there. As you arrive to the beach, the sand is extremely rocky and the water is not as blue as the photographs. You suddenly feel a sense of disappointment and anger. This is symbolic complex at its finest. Another element in Percyââ¬â¢s idea of language is what he calls the ââ¬Å"itâ⬠. For example, planning a trip to The Great Wall of China. While someone plans a trip they want to make it special so they follow every brochure because they want the traditional Great Wall experience with their own ââ¬Å"itâ⬠. Walker Percy describes the ââ¬Å"itâ⬠as, ââ¬Å"authentic elements which are unspoiled, not only meaning a place that is physically intact, it means also that it is not encrusted by renown and by the familiar, that it has not been discovered by othersâ⬠(Percy 569). While at The Great Wall of China, the people vacationing realize that the wall is just a wall and that every person to ever visit experienced the same thing. While disappointed they find a passage in the wall. These people decide to go on an adventure and enter the passage. Just through the passage they find Chinese people in their traditional attire, speaking and eating Chinese. Instantly they are in awe and observe these people in their native setting. This is the ââ¬Å"itâ⬠. This is the cultural and unique experience everyone longs for while on vacation. When my family and I go on vacation, I almost always try to find my own ââ¬Å"itâ⬠. When we went to Mexico we did all of the tourist things; visiting beaches, zip lining, and swimming with dolphins. Aside from the typical tourist attractions, my family and I stayed with a Mexican for a night. Not only did we get to stay in a Mexican home but the family cooked authentic Mexican food, played Mexican music, and shared stories and their traditions. My family and I felt like we experienced something that most people never get to. We were able to see how the people of Mexico live first hand. My family and I felt like we discovered something most people do not, we experienced the ââ¬Å"itâ⬠. Walker Percys interest in language recognizes the use of symbolic language to which plays a larger role in our consciousness. Percy uses the terms, dialectical movement, symbolic complex, and the ââ¬Å"itâ⬠to support his idea of language, as I explained throughout this paper. Whether youââ¬â¢re prom dress shopping or on vacation there is always a bigger picture. As Percy has explained, find the simplicity and authenticity that is found but has been lost. Find what has been lost. Do not set yourself or anyone else up for failure, break the whole idea into many pieces that make a beautiful picture, and find your own unique something. Be realistic and see things directly, that way youââ¬â¢re never disappointed. I believe Walker Percy wants people to learn from their mistakes and see the simple things in life for what they really are, beautiful. National Statistics 2 Injuries Fatalities According to US DOT, Motorcycle fatalities have more than doubled since 1998, increasing 130 percent over a ten year period. Registration trends Motorcycles account for 3 percent of all registered vehicles; however motorcycle fatalities represent 13 percent of traffic fatalities in the United States. Unlicensed motorcycle drivers1 out 4 motorcycle riders (25%) involved in fatal crashes in 2008 were not properly licensed. DUI is a factor in fatalities Alcohol is a significant factor in far too many motorcycle fatal crashes. In 2008, 29 percent of all fatally injured motorcycle operators had BAC levels of . 08 or higher, and 43 percent of those killed in single-vehicle crashes were over . 08 BAC, and that number jumps to 64 percent on weekend nights. Helmet Use Nationally Helmet Laws from State to State à 20 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico require helmet use by all; à Other States have ââ¬Å"partial helmetâ⬠laws based on age or no laws requiring helmet use. Enforcement Issues à There is limited training on enforcement of motorcycle laws because most police academies across the country do not have courses on the topic or only provide brief coverage on motorcycle laws in their basic motor vehicle law classes. à Training on motorcycle law enforcement is often specialized and appeals to those that ride. Most law enforcement officers do not ride motorcycles so they do not know what to look for regarding motorcycle equipment, helmets and the laws. Motorcycle Risks Motorcyclists Are at Risk from Other Drivers. Drivers of passenger vehicles and all types of vehicles need to be alert of motorcycles. Motorcycles are small and may be difficult for drivers of other vehicles to see. à Motorcycles have a much smaller profile than other vehicles. à Due to the smaller profile it can be difficult to judge the speed and distance of an approaching motorcycle. à After a crash, the drivers of other vehicles involved often say they never saw the motorcyclist and were unable to respond in time. à In the event of a crash, a motorcyclist is much more vulnerable and in much greater danger physically than other vehicle occupants. In fact, ââ¬Å"Per vehicle mile traveled in 2007, motorcyclists are about 37 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash and 9 times more likely to be injured. â⬠National Statistics Motorcyclist Deaths are Rising. à In 2008, motorcycle rider fatalities increased for the tenth straight year. à During 2008, 5,290 motorcyclists lost their lives in fatal highway crashes, an increase of 2 percent over the 5,174 motorcyclists killed in 2007. à Motorcycle riders were involved in more than one out of nine of all U. S. roadway fatalities. 47 percent of all fatalities in motorcycle crashes in 2008 involved another vehicle in addition to the motorcycle in the crash. à 77 percent of all two-vehicle crashes involving a motorcycle were struck in the front with only 7 percent struck in the rear. à In 41 percent of the crashes involving a motorcycle and another type of vehicle, the other vehicle was turning left when the motorcycle was going straight, passing, or overtaking the vehicle. à In 2008, 35 percent of all motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes were speeding. Law Enforcement. Law enforcement has a special contribution to make in the prevention of motorcycle crashes. Some of these contributions are simple and some are very difficult: dirt bikes in traffic are an obvious hazard; unlicensed motorcyclists are difficult to detect, and according to the Hurt study impaired motorcycle riders are far more difficult to detect than impaired automobile drivers. The increases involvement of the unlicensed rider in all crashes, and the impaired rider in fatal crashes, demands enforcement action, but legal requirements of due cause for a traffic stop may limit this action. These edited comments are a part of the Hurt Study released in 1981, which tried to research motorcycle crash cause factors and identify countermeasures to use in the idea of providing the basis of due cause for preliminary enforcement action and screening of traffic for unlicensed riders. One fundamental rider communication measure suggested in the study was enforcement action by ticketing for a for a traffic violation. The data of this research shows that driver improvement is vital to those motorcycle riders who have had traffic violations or crashes, and experience has shown that a special motorcycle traffic school is an effective alternative to the payment of a fine for a citation. Advantage should be made of this contact opportunity to require a special motorcycle traffic school for motorcycle riders with traffic citations so that critical information can be given to these likely crash candidates. The Hurt study was cited in many references about motorcycle crash cause studies and countermeasures over the years. This study is now 30 years old. A new study is currently under commission through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation to the Oklahoma Transportation Center for the ââ¬Å"new Motorcycle Crash Causation Studyâ⬠. The hope is that this study will shed new light on the causes of crashes and update the old data. In todayââ¬â¢s time, some citizens insist the existence of unions are a must to aid in employee freedom, while others view the labor unions as just another problem in the line of progress. The purpose of labor unions was for employed workers to come together and collectively agree on fundamental workplace objectives. The rise of the union came about after the Civil War- responding to the industrial economy. Surprisingly at the least unions became popular within the 1930-50ââ¬â¢s and began to slowly decrease, starting in the 1960ââ¬â¢s on to today. Although, the popularity of labor unions has decreased, its importance remains to be evident with politics, journalism, auto, and the public education industries. The objective of this paper is to shine light upon labor unions, taking a closer look at the disputed issues of union ethics, concerns of union diversity, and the opposing viewpoints of labor unions. Why Do Labor Unions Matter? Unions have an extensive history of standing up for workers. They have advocated rights of steelworkers, coal miners, clothing factory employees, teachers, health care workers, and many others. The labor movement is based on the idea that organized workers as a group have more power than individuals would have on their own.
